Jerry Lee Lewis had hit the big time when he married his cousin Myra Gale Brown, something which nearly ended his career. If it wasn't bad enough that she was his cousin, she was also thirteen years old. Lewis was in his early 20s. These days, we have television shows with undercover cops about those sorts of relationships. When you're a famous rock 'n' roll icon in 1958, however, you don't get arrested. You do, however, go from big headlining gigs to barely getting booked at clubs, which is what happened to Lewis. It took a while to get some of his steam back, and he never fully recovered. Brown was Lee's first cousin once removed, and any actual discussion as to genetics when it comes to cousins mating is best left to the professionals, but the two did have a pair of totally normal children - Steve Allen Lewis, who drowned at a young age, and Phoebe Allen Lewis, who is alive to this day. The couple stuck out 13 years of bad press before finally getting divorced; Lewis would remarry several more times.
