10 Weirdest Weapons Used During World War II

8. A Man's Best Friend - Dogs Tied With Explosives Were Sent To Run At Tanks By The Soviets

Anti Tank Dogs

Dogs were trained and used by the Soviet military during World War II in order to blow-up German tanks on the frontline.

Approved for use by the nation's Revolutionary Military Council from 1924 onwards, anti-tank dogs were utilised extensively between 1941 and 1942 - when 40,000 were deployed. Originally the dogs were trained to carry 12kg mines strapped to their body towards a specific target before dropping them. However, this proved too difficult and instead the dogs were retrained to run directly at any enemy tank they saw - blowing both it and themselves up.

The Germans were terrified of the dogs, knowing how dangerous they could be - and in certain cases the Wehrmacht would even prioritise searching a town or city for these animals before doing anything else.
