6. V-3 Cannon - The So-Called "Nazi Supergun"

The Vergeltungswaffe 3 (or V-3 cannon) was a Nazi "supergun" which was planned to be used to bombard London with shells fired from Pas-de-Calais in northern France.

Two large bunkers were dug in the region to house the weapon, which had an enormous 140-metre barrel that was propellant charged by several side-channels in order to accelerate the speed of the shells.

With a range of more than 100miles, London would have been well within reach for the two massive V-3 cannons that were being installed in northern France - but British shelling in 1944 destroyed the huge weapons before they could be completed.

Two shorter V-3s (which were about a third of the size of the ones planned for northern France) were used to shell Luxembourg in 1945, although just 10 civilians died before American troops captured the weapons. The Nazi "supergun" didn't turn out to be so super after all...
