What’s Really Going On: Lenticular Clouds

Altocumulus lenticularis is a high-altitude cloud formation that usually chills out around mountain ranges, hanging in the sky and looking for all the world like an alien spacecraft.

It is thought that many reports of UFO sightings can be put down to the misidentification of lenticular clouds by those who are unfamiliar with them. The formations take on a seemingly unnatural saucer shape and will remain stationary despite wind direction, giving the impression of conscious control. The smooth surface can even take on the appearance of shiny metal in comparison to their fluffier brothers and sisters.

There are even some that are able to correctly identify lenticular clouds, but believe that they are simply cloaking devices for the alien ships within. An interesting theory, but so far, none of the gliders (who will actively seek them out due to the super-fun air currents) has gone smashing into the side of a poorly-disguised space ship on any of their encounters with the cloud formations.
