11 Creepy Paranormal Phenomena Debunked By Science
5. The Bermuda Triangle
What’s Really Going On: A Media Storm
The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is an infamous stretch of ocean in the North Atlantic, well known for claiming countless ships and aircraft and damning them to oblivion. There have been reports of electronics going haywire, compasses that don’t point north, whole ships being swallowed by the sea and many craft simply disappearing off the face of the Earth.
So what could possibly be the cause? Could it be a black hole, a deadly whirlpool, or even a vicious sea monster? Some have even posited the theory that the phenomenon is caused by the ancient technology of the lost city of Atlantis claiming passing ships for its own.
Why is this patch of ocean so deadly? Well, the short answer is: It Isn’t.
After an extensive amount of research, a librarian by the name of Larry Kusche came to the conclusion that, despite the hype, the area known as the Bermuda Triangle has claimed no more lives than any other similarly trafficked stretch of ocean. The story seemed to have arisen as a simple bit of sensationalism, which then began to perpetuate its own myth.
Many of the “unexplained” disappearances can be put down to unreported storms in the area or ships that have gone off course and had their disappearance publicised, but not their reappearance. Some of the stories can simply be found to be straight up lies with absolutely no evidence of them happening at all.
It would seem that a combination of sloppy research, hype, and sensationalism, all tied together by the reputation, is all that there is behind this modern day myth.
