In the Western world, we take so many things for granted - newspapers slagging off politicians and exposing their frequent skulduggery, politicians from different parties screeching at each other in Parliament and widespread civil liberties. In essence, our governments are decided by us and they don't intrude too much into our lives. Some people may talk of a nanny state or grumble about government policies, but the fact of the matter is - we live in democratic nations and enjoy all of the perks of a democracy. So spare a thought for our brethren who live under dictatorships. They do not have freedom of speech, the government intrudes into their lives with secret police and harsh, repressive policies and they are frequently impoverished with their rulers flaunting their vast wealth in front of them but offering no help. Authoritarian states frequently hurt their own citizens - inciting Genocide and perpetrating crimes against humanity. The recent conflict in Syria with the use of chemical weapons against its own population shows us the diabolical lows tyrants can stoop to. There have been much worse tyrants in the past century (e.g. Hitler and Stalin) but I have chosen to discuss with you the Top Eleven Most Despicable Dictators that are at large in the world today.
