A few die-hard Nirvana fans will no doubt be aware that immediately before his death Kurt Cobain had planned to collaborate with REM frontman Michael Stipe. After enjoying the band's performances on MTV's Unplugged session so much, Kurt and the rest of the band had decided to take their next album in a much softer and haunting direction, with Stipe brought in to help. That's one side of the story though, the other is that Stipe had deliberately reached out to Cobian in an attempt to save his life Regardless, what most don't know though, is that Cobain and Stipe had grown so close over the years that he was even made Frances' godfather. In the wake of her father's death, Stipe stepped in to help look after Frances' in the aftermath. To this day the two remain close, and Cobain frequently cites her godfather as "one of the greatest humans on the planet".
