12 Animals The Human Race Tragically Killed Off

6. Falkland Islands Wolf (Extinct 1876)

The Falkland Islands is primarily famous for two things - the war, and sheep. But the "Falkland Islands wolf" can now be added to the list...

Known also as the "warrah", the Falklands Islands wolf (Dusicyon australis) was the only native land mammal in the British overseas territory before its extinction in 1876.

Similar to a maned wolf, and partially resembling a fox, the warrah lived on both the West and East Falkland islands but it was hunted for its fore by settlers due to the fear that it was a threat to the grazing sheep. Interestingly, when Charles Darwin visited the Falklands in 1833, he had already concluded that the animal would follow the dodo as extinct within "a very few years".
