12 Castles You Need To Visit In Great Britain

9. Dover Castle

A rather intimidating castle, don't you think? It is the largest castle in England and it has the longest recorded history of all other castles in the country. It was the first thing that people saw when they came into the country so it needed to have a dominating presence to make britain look great, which is why it is considered to be the 'Key to England'. Built in the 12th Century, King Henry II didn't think that the castle was perfect and began working on building and improving different sections of the castle. He built the Keep which was the last rectangular keep to ever be built, and it was continued to be remodelled by King John and Henry III who completed the defensive walls which surrounded the great tower. It was essentially a building made not to only defend the country, but to impress and entertain a lot of privileged nobleman so it's not a shock that a lot of people tried to take control of the castle. In the 13th Century, Dover withstood a ten month siege from supporters of Prince Louis who were rebelling against the English. It has also proved its worth and durability during two World Wars and it was at Dover that Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsay organised the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk.
