12 Controversial Books Which Incurred The Wrath Of The Censors

7. Mein Kampf - Adolf Hitler (1925)

Screen Shot 2013 10 30 At 14 01 26 Hitler recounts his life and lays out his repulsive ideology in his book Mein Kampf. Obviously it is incendiary stuff and could be used for nefarious purposes by Neo Nazis or anti-semitic groups or individuals. In Germany, the book will fall into the public domain in 2016. Because Hitler was a resident of Munich, Mein Kampf belongs to the province of Bavaria. In accordance with the government, it is illegal to copy or print the book. Owning and buying the book is legal as is trading it so long as there is no intent to war monger or incite hatred. Most German libraries carry heavily edited and annotated versions. In 2008, Stephen Kramer, leader of the Central Council of Jews in Germany called for unabridged versions to be allowed and volunteered his services in editing and annotating the text. Mein Kampf was briefly allowed in Albania - under the pretext that it shows what extremism can do. It was quickly recalled. In Argentina, it is forbidden to print or import the book but it is apparently readily available under the counter due to copies being smuggled from Chile where there is no ban. In Austria, it is legal to have the book but in China it is forbidden, except for cases of academic research. Mein Kampf is perfectly legal in France and is said to be widely popular in India where it has been published in hundreds of editions. Possession and trade of Mein Kampf is legal in Poland except if the possession is with intent to promote National Socialist ideals. Formerly available in Russia, in 2010, the book was outlawed on the basis that it promotes extremism. It is a growing bestseller in Turkey and sells 15,000 copies a year in the USA.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
