The other lesson we can learn from this book is the necessity of maintaining long-term friendships in this world. When Richie and crew initially defeat Pennywhistle in their youths, it's an act of comradeship that unites them in their adulthood. Having friends with a similar background makes them relatable sources with whom you can share common ground. They understand your struggles, your successes and even your failures because of that similar background. In the case of the five kids from Maine, they have their friendship to shield them from the horror that Pennywhistle brought to their small town, and ultimately into their adult lives. Friends are important, and not just for floating with down there....
