12 Scariest Stephen King Books

10. Desperation (1996)

Desperationhc In Desperation, a number of people are arrested on spurious charges by a police deputy called Collie Entragian on the deserted Highway 50 in Nevada. Entragian is the deputy of a mining town called Desperation, which seems to have no other inhabitants but himself and the unfortunate families he slings in the slammer. They happen to be pretty resourceful people and bust their way out of jail, arming themselves and discussing what to do. Collie Entragian is possessed by the spirit of Tak - who commands the nearby desert wildlife and has to change forms to stay alive. Most of the survivors just want to get the hell out of Desperation, but one of them states it is God's will they are there and they have to eliminate Tak/Entragian. Reluctantly they fight the entity down a mineshaft but can they survive the many manifestations of Tak, including mutating members of their group? I thought that Desperation was a really scary book. I think that had to do with the remoteness of the location - the Nevada desert, the abandoned mining town, the jail cells, the supernatural villain Collie Entragian, how will the victims escape all of that? Their journey to escape really is thrilling. Even God is dragged into the whole shebang as a goodie. The idea of a host for Tak that goes into a state of decomposition and must find another host is tackled in a most scary manner and is the downfall of a lot of victims in the book. A nightmarish read all around and proof King is still the greatest scariest writer writing today.
