13 Scariest Stephen King Book Passages

3. Mike Noonan Goes Back To Sara Laughs - Bag Of Bones

The house has been aired out and didn't smell a bit musty; instead of still, stale air, there was a faint and pleasing aroma of pine. I reached for the light inside the door, and then, somewhere in the blackness of the house, a child began to sob. My hand froze where it was and my flesh went cold...then it began to fade.
Bag of Bones has several creepy moments in it just like this one; small fractions of time where protagonist Mike Noonan's imagination seems to run wild. The film version doesn't seem to portray these little moments as well as the novel does; although the overriding story is the same. Noonan returns to his summer retreat lake house following the death of his wife and a sudden spell of writer's block. With the town not seeming the same, he invests in helping a local woman and her child in their time of need - but something in Sara Laughs is not right at all. The book is one of King's scariest, with a twist end and plenty of tension throughout. There are a lot of empty house moments as well; so next time you're home alone, make sure you've got your imagination under control.

I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
