2. The Wall
There are obstacles in life. Of course there are. And there are walls in life. They hold our houses up. The innate fear in any runner though is that mental wall that could build itself in-front of you at any moment. You can be having the run of your life, the miles just flying by, and then it hits. It might start with that little injury. It might be the start of a stitch that you manage to breathe away but, either way, the minute your concentration goes its like a smack in the face. A smack in the face with the same baseball bat you used to damage your knee. Its here that you need all your motivation. All your courage. All your strength. All those months running in the cold. Eating pasta. Eating cold pasta. Its all for now. To fight on through. Then. Then you do it. If youre going to need anything to break through the wall, you know its got to be done. So, without anyone noticing, you pull out your earphones, press play on your MP3 and there, right there, you start mouthing along to Eye of the Tiger and, boom, the wall is broken. If any other runners ask though you just used motivational brain techniques to do it and not the lyrics from the Rocky III theme song.
