9. Jane Addams

Not only was Addams a pioneer for women's suffrage, she was also determined to make world peace a reality in her lifetime. She was a committed pacifist and peace activist and even won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for her efforts her humanitarian campaigns. She founded the Women's International League For Peace in 1919 and worked tirelessly for years to get governments to sign peace agreements.

Addams helped a lot of groups that were considered minorities at the time; women, children and immigrants. She worked hard to stop the exploitation of child labour, she helped the poor and she set up centres for immigrants. She taught women that they were valued more than their ability to be mothers and called on the middle class to use their time and wealth to help exercise their civic duties.
