14 Things We Can't Believe Happened 10 Years Ago

10. Sex And The City Ended

In 2004 we said goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw and her cohorts from HBO's romantic comedy flagship show, which was innovative and pushed the boundaries for women on television to talk openly about sex far more than we'd ever seen before. Although it was in Sarah Jessica's contract that she had to always wear a bra during her sex scenes, the other three had no problems in getting their kit off during the show's run. When it ended in 2004, we all breathed a sigh of relief when Carrie escaped life in Paris with Aleksandr Petrovsky, was reunited with her precious 'Carrie' necklace and eventually got swept off her feet by Mr Big, although many of would've preferred her happy ending to include former flame Aiden. In fact Candace Bushnell, author of Sex And The City, has confessed that in reality Carrie wouldn't have ended up with Mr Big and that "women who end up with that character...they usually get divorced after a year." The series tackled many issues such as promiscuity, womanhood, safe sex and male-and-female friendships. We loved the four main characters because in their own way we could see a part of ourselves in all of them (and I'm not just referring to the XY chromosome), as Carrie once said: "I will never be the woman with the perfect hair, who can wear white and not spill on it". In 2004 the show ended on a high and Sarah Jessica Parker was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series while Cynthia Nixon won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series.
