14 Things Only People From Northumberland Can Be Proud Of
10. George Stephenson: Creator Of The Inner-City Railway
One of Northumberland's most favourite sons, George Stephenson was born in 1781 in Wylam. He became well known as a civil and mechanical engineer, creating a safer lamp for miners before creating the first inter-city railway, earning himself the nickname of "The Father Of Railways". In 1829 he completed the first passenger railway, with his locomotive "The Rocket" powering the train, which sent shock waves around the engineering world with many of the first American railroad builders coming to Tyneside to consult with Stephenson. So train spotters basically owe everything to Northumberland. You're welcome.
