Best-known for his brilliant work of fiction The Jungle Book and his poems including "Gunga Din", author Joseph Rudyard Kipling declined the chance to become a knight on three occasions during the 1890s and 1900s. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907, becoming the first English-language writer to receive the accolade and remaining the youngest to be given it, the Indian-born Brit also rejected the chance to become Poet Laureate in 1895. He did not publicly reveal why he rejected the accolades, however.
