15 Greatest Stephen King Short Stories Of All Time
4. L.T.'s Theory Of Pets
Of all the stories that make this list, L.T'.s Theory of Pets might be the most under-read of the lot, despite it being one of King's best tales and the author's personal favourite from the collection Everything's Eventual.
The story follows L.T., an overly chatty co-worker of the tale's narrator. The narrator recalls L.T.'s marital trouble, and how his wife's purchasing of a cat and dog added to their recent break-up. Though a fairly standard character study and an in-depth look at paranoia and relationships, L.T.'s Theory of Pets is much more than meets the eye, full of striking imagery and unspoken twists that leave much to the imagination and suggest there's much more to the story than L.T. (or the narrator) is even aware of.
Using the pets as a metaphor for L.T.'s grief over his failed marriage and how he reacts to the tragedy surrounding his wife, L.T's Theory of Pets is one of King's most daring and intriguing stories, and also one of his very best.
