14. Emu War

First person shooter games always seem to revolve around World War I or World War II, yet for some reason, nobody has covered the Emu War, truly one of the most significant conflicts in world history. It turns out there was an overpopulation of emus in Western Australia during the early 1930s, and so soldiers armed with machine guns were sent in to kill them off.

The article really breaks down every aspect of the "battle," which began when 50 emus were sighted, "but the birds split into small groups and ran so that they were difficult to target." That's right, the emus immediately outsmarted the professionally trained soldiers.

A few days later, 1,000 emus were spotted in the same location, but a soldier's gun jammed and all but twelve got away. The Wikipedia author treats these birds like they're part of an actual, organized army, at one point quoting an expert who says, "The Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics."

To make a long story short, the emus won the war: they constantly evaded soldiers, and the official report as of the second operation listed 986 kills but 9,860 rounds fired. Well played, emus. Well played.
