When is a rock not a rock? When it’s actually a well-camouflaged fish with venomous spines in its back.

The Stonefish lives in the shallow coastal of Australia (because, of course it does), where it does a better job of looking like a rock than most rocks. In doing so, it lies motionless, until a smaller creature comes by, at which point it suck them into its mouth with surprising speed. Because of this incredible camouflage ability, they nearly impossible to locate, and so stepping on them is a very likely occurrence.

That only gets worse when you consider the fact that the Stonefish is the world’s most venomous fish.

Though envenomations from stepping on, and getting stung by, a stonefish aren't particularly fatal, it's the animal's camouflage that makes it such a terrifying creature.

You could be walking on a beach in the shallow water, and you could accidentally step on a stone, and that stone can stab you and, in rare cases, kill you. If there was ever an animal that deserved the outright hatred from beach-goers and divers everywhere, it's this rock-impersonating fish.
