15 Things Only People From Jersey Will Understand

4. No One Believes You When You Do A Jersey Accent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5xQ_hEmCVM Just like Jerriais, our original Norman language, the accent is dying out. Listen to any native and the majority of them have no accent at all. These days it's mostly spoken by old people on park benches. Oftentimes, Jersey folk feel guilty for letting a huge part of their heritage slip away from them. Then we reminds ourself of what the Jersey accent actually sounds like. It sounds like a mixture of South African and Birmingham. People demand to hear it and then, when we oblige they say, "No. No you don't sound like that. That's mental." Watch the video above. It's of a lovely fellow called Hedley Le Maistre, who records comedy songs about Jersey. This is a fairly solid example of the Jersey accent. It's a nonsense tongue.
