15 Things Only People From Jersey Will Understand

15. John Nettles Is Our God

A lot of people have heard of Bergerac, the popular detective drama about Jim Bergerac who solved mysterious in and around Jersey. But not a lot people know how much the people of Jersey adore the actor who played the title role. On the last moon of winter, it's tradition for the islanders of Jersey to come together in Liberation Square for a festival called La Nuit de Jim. The children of the island build a life-sized representation of the actor out of straw, place it in a 1947 Triumph Roadster, and then set fire to it. A ring of twelve dads in leather jackets (one from each parish) then dance around the burning pyre, whistling the theme tune backwards. They call them 'Nettlers'. Ok, that's not true, but the work of John Nettles was appreciated so much he was asked back to record a film about the heritage of Jersey, played daily at The Living Legend tourist village. In it he plays Captain Nemo. That is true.
