For all you all kitty cat fanatics out there. Yes, if you're pregnant you can indeed come in contact with your feline friends without fear of something terrible happening to your unborn baby. However, cat litter is another thing entirely. In a nutshell: Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasmagondii that can threaten the health of an unborn child. You can get the infection from handling soil or cat litter that contains cat feces infected with the parasite. In fact, you can just as easily be exposed to toxoplasmosis if cats have been in your garden or sandbox. So yes, you can keep your cat but you are indeed going to be facing some challenges, but don't worry, none of them are even remotely insurmountable. On a lighter note, about 15 percent of women of childbearing age are immune to toxoplasmosis. If you've been around cats for a while, you may have already had toxoplasmosis, in which case you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
