9. Gandi Was Nominated For The Nobel Peace Prize On Five Occasions... But Never Actually Won It, As He Was Set To Claim The Award In 1948 When He Died
On five separate occasions - between 1937 and 1948 - Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize but he did not receive the accolade once, only making the shortlist twice (in 1937 and 1947). Despite this, it is believed that Gandhi would have won the award in 1948 had he not been assassinated, with the committee stating that "there was no suitable living candidate" who could be given the prize. There was therefore no winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948, with Gandhi unable to claim the accolade as it cannot be given posthumously. In the 1980s, the Nobel Committee publicly admitted that they regretted the fact that the Indian campaigner had never claimed the Peace Prize, and also revealed that the 1989 winner (the 14th Dalai Lama) was "in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi".
