3. A Stamp Was Released In Britain Honouring Gandhi's 100th Birthday... Even Though He Had Spent His Lifetime Pushing The Country To Grant India Independence
Mahatma Gandhi would have been 100 years old on October 2, 1969, if he had lived that long - and among the nations to commemorate this centenary was the one who he had spent his entire life trying to gain India independence from. In 1969, the British Royal Mail commissioned a special tribute stamp - the first ever to to commemorate an overseas leader and the first to be designed by a foreign artist - in honour of Gandhi. Interestingly though, the stamp was released to coincide with Indian Independence Day on August 15, rather than Gandhi's birthday (October 2).
