He may be known worldwide as "Mahatma Gandhi" - but that is not his actual name. Gandhi was actually born "Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi" - but was given the honorific title of "Mahatma", which means "high-souled" or "venerable", while he was in South Africa in 1914. Another name by which Gandhi is know is "Bapu" - which is an endearing Indian name for "father" or "papa".
