13. Football Teams In Two South African Cities Were Established By Gandhi... Both Named "The Passive Resisters"

It is not widely known that Gandhi embraced the very British sport of football and was a keen follower of the game. Not only did he like the sport, however, he also realised the merits of football - and how it could be used to fight against oppression and racial discrimination inn South Africa. Gandhi spent close to 20 years in South Africa in the early-20th Century and he helped to form two football clubs - in Johannesburg and Pretoria - both named "The Passive Resisters". Let's hope that wasn't also the slogan of their defence...
