2. He Is One Of Only Three People To Have A National US Holiday Observed In Their Honour... And The Only One To Actually Be Born On United States Soil
Only three people in the USA have federal national holidays in their honour. They are the first US President George Washington, the "discoverer" of the Americas Christopher Columbus, and former Civil Rights Movement leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Observed on the third Monday of January every year (which is around the date of King's birthday, January 15th), Martin Luther King Jr Day is celebrated around the entirety of the United States. Interestingly, neither Christopher Columbus - who was Italian - nor George Washington were born in the United States. The latter was born in Virginia but while it was a colony, so technically he was a British citizen, meaning Luther King Jr is the only person born an American to have a day celebrated in his own honour.
