18 Mind-Blowing Facts About Saddam Hussein

1. Hussein Went On Hunger Strike During His Trial... And Was Hospitalised With Nalnutrition

When Hussein was discovered by American forces hiding down a hole at a farmhouse near Tikrit in December 2003, he was immediately placed in custody and then given over to the Iraqi authorities so he could stand trial. Charged with the murder of more than 150 people, torture of women and children, as well as the illegal arrest of hundreds of others, Hussein and his lawyers contested the court's authority and legitimacy - while maintaining he was still the President of Iraq. During the trial, on July 23, 2006, Hussein was hospitalised following the effects of a hunger strike - which he had launched due to the fact he believed the court proceedings were illegal - and became gravely ill. However, after being fed via tube in hospital, he recovered enough to be able to return to his trial. Eventually, Hussein was convicted and sentenced to death in November 2006 - and his appeal failed on December 26, leading to his execution by hanging on December 30.
