18 Things We All Should Do (But Don't Because 'It's Weird')

17. Sit Next To Someone When Other Seats Are Available

Connecting with other human beings is a beautiful thing so surely every opportunity to chat to a stranger should be greeted with open arms. Yet if we choose to sit next to someone on the train, bus or in a waiting room when there are free seats further away, it€™s assumed we're either a robber, a rapist or have just escaped from a nearby secure hospital. The social norm says that we must choose the seat furthest away from other human life or risk looking like the kind of public transport pervert we teach our children to avoid, yet thanks to social media we live in a world where we are more connected to other people than ever yet more isolated than ever. With the click of a button we can communicate with people on the other side of the world yet in reality we are alone in our bedrooms, therefore we must seize the chance to make real contact whenever we can. The next time we see a free seat next to a stranger? Let€™s sit in it and start a conversation.
