Many erroneously perceive Potter to be a fluffy childrens novels, or, at least, pure escapism; some of us know better, and Rowling herself has made evident many parallels to the problems of our real world that the wizarding world, for all of its magical solutions, has as well. Rowling stated that she consciously made parallels to ideologies similar to that of Nazism to show that the wizarding world was not free of bigotry, of hierarchies and of the idea of superiority based on a false pride in perceived purity exemplified in Potter by magical blood purity, a huge point of contention in wizarding society. In this way, Harry Potter does parallel evil regimes like Nazism that oppress based upon the notion of purity. The rise of Grindelwald, too, very directly parallels World War II (as he was defeated in 1945, and was a harsh defender of magical purity). Smaller points contribute to magical societys bigotry, such as the corrupted press, House-Elf treatment and werewolf discrimination even among the established good wizards, and present even before Voldemort took over the Ministry. All done ultimately as an effective plea for tolerance, acceptance, and challenging a damaging status quo a message that was very deliberately meant to recall problems in our society.
Canadian student. Spends probably an unhealthy amount of time enthusing over musicals, unpopular TV shows, and Harry Potter. Main life goal: to become fluent in Elvish.
