20 Facts Every Harry Potter Super-Nerd Should Know

18. Amortentia Smells Like€ Weasleys?

It€™s perhaps by no accident that Rowling placed the Potions lesson on the love potion Amortentia in the sixth year, where our sixteen-year-old heroes€™ and heroines€™ hormones were running amuck. Some eagle-eyed fans have noticed some particularities implied in the text of what Amortentia smells like to different characters (for those of you unfamiliar, Amortentia smells like one€™s favourite scents). Specifically, in Half-Blood Prince, Hermione is telling the class, as she does, of this unique property of the potion, giving herself as an example €“ only, she stops after €˜new parchment,€™ clearly embarrassed. Readers assumed €“ and Rowling confirmed €“ that she was a few seconds away from blurting out her crush on the apparently sweet-smelling Ron Weasley. Similarly, when Harry gets a whiff of the potion, he notes that it smells like treacle tart and €œsomething flowery€ he recalls he smelled at the Burrow: in this case, it was later revealed that our hormonal hero was unknowingly recalling the scent of Ginny€™s €“ his own preferred Weasley €“ hair.
