20 Facts That Sound Like Bullsh*t But Are Totally True

10. Both Of Your Eyes Have A Large Blind Spot And Your Brain Fills It In With Whatever It Thinks Should Be There.

So you think your eyes show you what's actually out there? Ah, you fools! Outwitted by your own brain. While the eyes do quite a bit of work in helping us navigate through the big wide world, each peeper has a blind spot, meaning the brain sometimes has to fill in what's there by examining the surrounding area. Light comes into your pupil, and hits the retina on the back of the eye. The light-sensing proteins of the retina relay these signals to the optic nerve which sends this information to the brain. The blind spot occurs because the optic nerve ends at the retina itself. Most of the time, the other eye will see what's happening, but if the blind spots cross while looking at a specific object, or if you're looking out of one eye, the brain just fills in the spot missing. You don't see as much as you think you do. Pretty clever, huh?
