20 Incredible Inventions You Didn't Know Were Scottish

8. MRI Body Scanners

Magnetic resonance imaging €“ otherwise known as MRI €“ has truly pioneered the way in which we view the human body. Using magnetic fields and radiowaves it allows doctors and scientists to diagnose patients without exposing them to the deadly effects of ionizing radiation. Next time we feel like there's something wrong with us and head to the hospital for a scan we can thank Professor of Medical Physics John Mallard at the University of Aberdeen for this amazing breakthrough.

7. Refrigerators

Another invention that none of us could do without but at the same time no one gets remotely enthusiastic about purchasing (unless they're splashing out a fortune on one replete with unnecessary gimmicks) is the refrigerator. It may have revolutionized the way we eat but we could all do without that annoying hum. Still, it's a small price to pay for storing perishable foods for longer, and we can thank William Cullen for inventing it for us, particularly on a hot day supping a cold beer.
