The reason why Clinton adopted the surname of his stepfather was because he never knew his biological dad - who died three months before he was even born. William Jefferson Blythe Jr was a travelling salesman and he died in a car crash three months before Virginia Dell Cassidy gave birth to Bill. Clinton's mother then moved to New Orleans to study nursing not long after he was born, and Bill was instead raised by his grandparents in Hope, Arkansas.
