20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About Stephen King

3. He Refuses To Sign Autographs

For the past few years Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has refused to sign autographs for fans, appearing in a series of bizarre videos and press releases €œwarning€ people €œwith peace and love€ to quit sending him letters and stuff they want signing, because he's sick of it. Which is a little ungrateful. Stephen King has a similar attitude to the practice, although the reason why is disputed.

In fact it's been subject to a number of rumours. One fan-circulated myth suggested it was some sort of superstition of King's which, to be fair, wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the author plagued by irrational fears. Another stated that if sent a book to sign, King would burn it and return the ashes.

As it happens neither is true, and King has had to go out of his way to refute both rumours as patently untrue. He really doesn't sign autographs, but his reason for not doing so is actually way more simple. He just doesn't go in for the idolising of celebrities, and so refuses to play into that by making his autograph something to treasure. He will give them on book tours, though.
