Routinely finding itself at the bottom (or even worse, at the top) of those lists Channel 4 like to make documentaries about, the last few decades have seen its reputation for graft and industry replaced by stories of hardship and a football pitch that's always covered in litter. But who cares what the rest of the world thinks? For those who've lived there, even for the shortest amount of time, Sunderland means something completely different. For every story of a shop closing down there's 5 more of a plucky start-up opening their doors, and for every story of a decline in industry there's 5 great young bands writing a song about it. Sunderland might not be a city with a lot of cool or interesting things in it, but it's at least a city with a lot of cool and interesting people - which is more than can be said for some of its regional neighbours. Whether it's a place you've lived, a place you've studied, or a place you've visited, Sunderland will have thrown up the most unique set of headaches. They raise a wry smile of course, but that still doesn't stop them doing your head in big time...
