Anyone who has ever got drunk and decided it was a great idea to order in 3 sharing-sized bowls of Nachos for themselves owes a big debt of gratitude to one Ignacio Anaya. It was his ingenious use of tortilla chips, cheese and jalapeños in 1943 that created the snack.

Just as his restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico was closing, Anaya welcomed in the wives of US soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Duncan. They were tired and hungry after a long shopping trip, but the chef didn't have much to make them. That's when he smartly whipped up the first ever batch of Nachos.

They weren't called that at first, of course. Ignacio is often shortened to 'Nacho' in Spanish, and that was Anaya's nickname amongst friends. When asked what his tasty new dish was called, he said it was "Nacho's especiales".
