As anyone who has ever licked one can attest, postage stamps have a strange taste that leaves your mouth feeling dry and like it's filling up with sick all at once. It feels strange, and it's best not to go around doing it too often unless you want to get fat.

The average British stamp contains 5.9 calories. This is far more than a US one (1/10th of a calorie) and bizarrely less than any large commemorative stamps. They can contain up to 14.5 calories, meaning you should avoid licking them lest turning into a cast member on one of those 'Fat Camp' reality TV shows be your future.

What causes the calorie count then? It's the adhesive they paint on the back of those things that does it. That sticky stuff is the only glue that needs clearance from the Food and Drug Administration office before it can legally be used.
