Formerly a modern tourist area of the city of Famagusta, Varosha was fenced off by the Turkish army after their Invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

The UN have forbidden any attempt "to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants", so the area has remained abandoned for more than 40 years.
