16. Oradour-sur-Glane, France
In June 1944, a German retreating column pushed through Oradour-sur-Glane, near Limeges in France killing 642 residents, including 246 children perished.
Though burned down, the town has been left as a permanent witness and the new village of Oradour has been re-built a few kilometers away from where it once stood.
