22. Nixon Infamously Became The First And Only US President Ever To Resign From Office... As A Result Of The Watergate Scandal

Richard Nixon Resignation Gif On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon officially resigned the presidency of the United States - making him the first President in history to do so. After five-and-a-half years in office, and with two-and-a-half years still remaining in his second term, Nixon addressed the US public and announced he would resign - before he could be impeached or investigated over his role in the infamous Watergate Scandal. He left Vice-President Gerald Ford to assume the role as President - and his successor immediately admonished Nixon and ensured no criminal charges would be brought. The Watergate Scandal reached the very heart of the American political system and shook it to its very foundations - a nation and an idea built on the premise of freedom and liberty had a leader whose administration had committed illegal offences of harassing and bugging the offices of the Democratic Party.
