14. Doyle Helped To Force Through The Creation Of The UK Court Of Criminal Appeal
In 1906 Conan Doyle helped to clear the name of George Edalji - a half-British, half-Indian lawyer who had been wrongly jailed for mutilating animals - as he became a real-life Sherlock Holmes. Due to Conan Doyle's determination to see justice for Edalji, the Criminal Appeal Act of 1907 established the Court of Criminal Appeal in the UK partially in response to this case. As a result, those who are wrongly convicted can now appeal against the decision.
