14. Other People's Dogs Are Not For Patting

There are dogs everywhere. They're allowed on public transport, in shops, at your feet at a lot of cafes. Your instincts will be to pat them. In Australia, after a polite smile at the dog's owner, you are welcome to pat the animal and then engage the owner in discussion over what a good dog they are. In London, patting stranger's dogs is a faux pas. Though apparently the dogs don't know that. They'll still wander over, tail wagging, and you will be forced to keep your hands in your lap.
