23 Things Only A Chocolate Shop Employee Will Understand

15. The Realisation That Children Are Scary

Matilda - Bruce Bogtrotter
Warner Bros.

Somehow, between waking up in the morning and opening the shop door, children have become the single most terrifying thing in the world.

You'd never realised just how messy and destructive they can be, and you're not sure which you fear more; the arrival of a harassed-looking mother with two or three small children in tow, or the appearance of a group of teenagers outside. You're immediately on high alert, anticipating sticky finger-prints, broken stock, crying, and torn-open boxes in the case of the former, and a very different kind of sticky fingers in the latter.

It doesn't matter that you're probably only a few years older than them; they still chill you to your very core.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
