25 Disturbing Facts You Really Don't Want To Know

13. Hundreds Of Pirate Attacks Occur Each Year And Go Undocumented

Tom Hank's Captain Phillips may have opened the minds of Westerners to the idea of the modern pirate, but being outside Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia, many of us fail to realize the magnitude of a problem that piracy continues to be. Piracy reports, supplied by the IMB (International Maritime Bureau), document over hundreds of pirate attacks each year in all corners of the world, and there is no sign of these attacks stopping. What's even scarier is IMB personnel say they are only receiving a fraction of the actual attacks taking place. Often attacks go undocumented due to shipping companies wanting to save face in front of clients or stop their insurance premiums from increasing. People under the impression that pirates are funny looking guys with bright clothes and long hair, long dead since the eighteenth century, are living in a dream world. Piracy is more alive and kicking today than it was hundreds of years ago, and it is affecting all of us whether we realize it yet or not in the billions of dollars stolen in shipping every year.
