22. Churchill Dodged Prohibition Laws In America In Order To Get A "Medical Tipple" After He Was Run Over By A Car
During a visit to the New York City in 1931, Churchill looked to his right instead of his left - forgetting they drove on the other side in the USA - and was knocked down by an on-coming car. Having suffered a sprained shoulder, cuts to his face and bruises to his chest, Churchill was taken to a New York hospital in order to be treated. Such was his desire to have a drink to lift his spirits in a country where Prohibition was still present, Churchill managed to convince the doctor to write him a note that read:
"This is to certify that the post-accident concussion of Honourable Winston S Churchill necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits, especially at mealtimes."
As a result, Churchill got his wish and could continue boozing in a country where alcohol was banned.
