The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was one of the most colourful and eventful in living memory and was essentially China coming out to the world and an attempt to fashion a new sense of Chinese selfhood. This picture of the opening ceremony lighting up the Beijing National Stadium is a wonderful representation of the games as a whole.
