There was obviously nothing remotely "awesome" about the 9/11 attacks in 2001, but this photo - taken one week after the attacks - shows the search and rescue operation still ongoing and lighting up the area where the Twin Towers once stood. Volunteers came from far and wide to help with the efforts and this picture epitomises the post-attack defiance and unity between America and the rest of the world.
